Australian Shakespeare Company Privacy Policy

Last updated: 24 October 2026

Australian Shakespeare Company collects your name, email, mobile number, postcode and booking details to process tickets, provide performance updates and, with your consent, send marketing emails and SMS. You can unsubscribe from marketing at any time. We use Stripe for payments and Google Analytics, Google Ads, Meta and TikTok for website insights and promotion, depending on the tools and campaigns in use. These providers may process information overseas. This policy explains how we handle your information, your choices and how to contact us. For our UK operations, please refer to the separate Theatre on Kew Privacy Policy.

1. About this policy

Australian Shakespeare Company (“ASC”, “we”, “us” or “our”) respects your privacy. This policy applies when you purchase tickets, attend our Australian performances, visit our Australian websites, subscribe to communications or contact us.

We handle personal information in accordance with applicable Australian privacy laws, including the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles where they apply. Our email and SMS marketing practices are subject to the Spam Act 2003 (Cth).

Australian Shakespeare Company also operates in the United Kingdom through Theatre on Kew. For information about personal information handled in connection with those operations, please refer to the separate Theatre on Kew Privacy Policy linked above.

2. Information we collect

Depending on your interactions with us, we may collect:

  • Your name, email address and mobile or telephone number.

  • Your suburb, postcode, state, country and billing or postal address.

  • Booking details, including performances, dates, ticket types, seating, attendance records and transaction history.

  • Payment and refund information, including transaction references and payment status.

  • Your marketing preferences, consent records and unsubscribe requests.

  • Enquiries, feedback, survey responses and correspondence.

  • Accessibility or other attendance requirements you choose to provide.

  • Website and advertising interaction information, such as IP address, browser and device details, cookie identifiers, pages visited and links clicked.

We collect information reasonably necessary for our activities. Where accessibility information reveals health or other sensitive information, we will generally seek your consent before collecting it, unless an exception under law applies.

3. How we collect information

We generally collect information directly from you when you:

  • Purchase tickets online, by telephone or at a box office.

  • Create or update a customer account.

  • Subscribe to email or SMS communications.

  • Enter a promotion, complete a survey or provide feedback.

  • Contact us or request assistance.

  • Visit our websites or interact with our electronic communications.

We may also receive information from authorised ticketing agents, venues, booking partners or someone making a booking on your behalf. Analytics and advertising providers may collect information through the technologies described in section 9.

If you give us another person’s information, please ensure you have their permission and tell them about this policy. Providing someone’s contact details for a booking does not subscribe them to marketing.

You may contact us anonymously or use a pseudonym where practical. However, if you do not provide information needed to process a booking, payment, refund or enquiry, we may be unable to provide that service.

4. How we use information

We use personal information to:

  • Process bookings, payments, ticket delivery, exchanges and refunds.

  • Manage admissions, customer accounts and customer service.

  • Send essential booking information, including performance changes, cancellations, weather updates and venue instructions.

  • Respond to enquiries and accommodate attendance requirements.

  • Send marketing communications where we have the necessary consent.

  • Understand our audiences, measure advertising performance and improve our productions, services and websites.

  • Deliver relevant online advertising, subject to applicable consent requirements and available privacy settings.

  • Maintain records, prevent fraud, resolve disputes and meet legal obligations.

Where practical, we use aggregated or de-identified information for audience analysis and reporting.

5. Postcodes and audience information

We may use your postcode, suburb, state or country to understand where audiences come from, plan performances, assess the reach of our programs and identify events near you.

Where you have consented to marketing, we may use your location and booking history to tailor communications.

We may provide aggregated or de-identified geographic statistics to venues, funding bodies or other partners. We take reasonable steps to ensure these reports do not identify individual customers.

6. Email and SMS communications

Booking and service messages

We may email or SMS you about your booking or attendance, including confirmations, ticket delivery, reminders, performance changes, cancellations and safety information.

Unsubscribing from marketing does not prevent necessary service messages about an existing booking. These messages will be limited to their service purpose.

Marketing messages

With your consent, we may send newsletters, show announcements, offers, presale information and other promotional communications by email or SMS.

Purchasing a ticket or providing booking contact details does not, by itself, subscribe you to marketing. We record your preferences and the consent on which we rely.

You can withdraw marketing consent at any time by:

  • Using the unsubscribe link in a marketing email.

  • Following the unsubscribe instructions in a marketing SMS, such as replying STOP where replies are supported.

  • Contacting us using the details below.

We will action unsubscribe requests within five working days. We do not charge an unsubscribe fee, although your telecommunications provider may apply a standard SMS charge. You do not need to log in, create an account or provide additional personal information to use the unsubscribe facility.

We may retain a limited suppression record to ensure we continue to respect your preferences.

7. Payments and sharing information

Stripe is our payment processor. When you pay through Stripe, payment details and relevant transaction information are handled by Stripe to process payments, manage refunds and help prevent fraud. Stripe also handles personal information under its own Privacy Policy.

We may disclose relevant personal information to:

  • Ticketing platforms, authorised ticketing agents and booking providers.

  • Stripe, financial institutions and fraud prevention services.

  • Email, SMS, customer management, hosting, IT and support providers.

  • Google, Meta and TikTok in connection with the analytics and advertising activities described in this policy.

  • Venues and event delivery partners where needed for admissions, accessibility or your booking.

  • Professional advisers, regulators or authorities where required or authorised by law.

We take reasonable steps to ensure service providers protect personal information and use it for authorised purposes.

We do not sell personal information. Disclosures for analytics or advertising purposes are described in this policy. Providing information for a booking does not authorise sponsors or partners to add you to their own email or SMS marketing lists.

Third-party ticket sellers, payment providers and advertising platforms may also handle information under their own privacy policies.

8. Overseas handling of information

We use service providers including Meta, TikTok, Google and Stripe for advertising, analytics and payment processing. These services may involve personal information being stored, accessed or processed outside Australia.

Overseas recipients may be located in the United States and other countries where these providers and their service providers operate. The locations involved depend on the service and the arrangements used by each provider. Further information is available in their privacy policies:

Where we disclose personal information overseas, we take reasonable steps required by applicable Australian privacy law to protect it.

9. Analytics, online advertising and cookies

We use Google Analytics, Google Ads, Meta advertising and TikTok advertising, depending on the tools and campaigns in use, to understand website activity, promote performances and measure campaign results.

Depending on the tools and settings enabled, these services may use cookies, pixels, tags and similar technologies to collect or receive information about:

  • Your browser, device and online identifiers.

  • Pages viewed and interactions with our websites.

  • Advertisements viewed or clicked.

  • Booking or purchase events and associated transaction values.

  • Approximate location derived from technical information.

We may use these tools to measure conversions and show relevant advertising, including advertising to people who have previously visited our websites. Providers may associate information with other information they hold, depending on your settings and their policies.

You can manage cookies through your browser settings and any consent controls provided on our websites. You can also manage advertising preferences through the settings available from Google, Meta and TikTok.

Restricting cookies may affect some website or booking functions and does not necessarily stop all advertising. Unsubscribing from email or SMS marketing does not automatically change your browser cookies or advertising platform preferences.

Further information about how these providers handle information is available in their privacy policies linked in section 8.

10. Security and retention

We take reasonable technical and organisational steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, unauthorised access, modification and disclosure.

We retain information for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy, including legal, accounting and dispute resolution requirements. When it is no longer required, we take reasonable steps to destroy or de-identify it, subject to applicable recordkeeping obligations.

If a data breach occurs, we will assess and respond to it and notify affected individuals and regulators where required by law.

11. Access and correction

You may request access to personal information we hold about you or ask us to correct it by contacting us using the details below.

We may need to verify your identity. We will respond within a reasonable period. If we refuse access or correction, we will explain why, unless the law prevents us from doing so, and explain how to complain.

There is no charge to make a request. If a reasonable charge applies to providing access, we will explain it in advance.

12. Enquiries and complaints

Please direct privacy enquiries, access or correction requests, and complaints to:
