The American tribal love-rock musical HAIR celebrates thesixties counterculture in all its barefoot, longhaired, bell-bottomed, beadedand fringed glory. To an infectiously energetic rock beat, the show wowsaudiences with songs like “Aquarius,” “Good Morning, Starshine,” “Hair,” “I GotLife,” and “Let the Sunshine.” Exploring ideas of identity, community, globalresponsibility and peace, HAIR remains relevant as ever as it examines what itmeans to be a young person in a changing world.

The Australian Shakespeare Company is proud to present abrand-new production of Hair the Musical, directed by Glenn Elston.

We are committed to inclusive casting and encourage allperformers to make a submission.

Costume Fittings – Early September (Williamstown)

Melbourne Rehearsals – Starts on or around Monday 29September 2025

Melbourne First Performance - Friday 24 October 2025

Melbourne Closing Night - On or Around - Sunday 30 November 2025

Notes

Nudity: At the end of Act 1, there is a short(approx. 45 seconds) section of full-frontal nudity for all cast.

Musicians on stage: Some roles may involve actors playing instruments on stage (particularly guitar). Please indicate musical skills at submission.

Melbourne Based: All cast should be Melbourne Based.

In-person auditions will be held in Melbourne CBD or Williamstown.

Audition Information

Onlyapplicants selected for an audition will be contacted. We sincerely appreciatethe time and effort of all who submit their interest.

Thoseinvited to audition will receive confirmation and full details regarding theprocess.

Participationin the audition is entirely voluntary. By attending, auditionees acknowledgeand accept any inherent risks associated with the activities involved.

Pleasenote: Photos and video may be captured during the audition process for internalcasting purposes or promotional use.

Roles

Claude (Early 20s – Late 20s): Aromantic, gentle soul torn between resisting and submitting to the draft. Oftenintrospective, with a quiet intensity. Tenor.

Berger (Early 20s – Late 20s):The charismatic and manic leader of the tribe. Irreverent, impulsive, andmagnetic. Must be confident, comic, and provocative. Strong rock Tenor.

Sheila (Early 20s – Late 20s):A passionate political activist and idealist. Intelligent, articulate, andemotionally complex. Mezzo-Soprano/Alto with strong belt.

Dionne (20s): Powerful andspiritual. One of the tribe’s most joyful and expressive members. Must haveexcellent gospel/soul vocal ability. Soprano with strong belt.

Hud (20s – 30s): A bold,confident, and dynamic Black male-identifying character. Defiant and sexy.Funky soul baritone with attitude.

Jeanie (Early 20s): A quirky,loveable, and heavily pregnant member of the tribe. In love with Claude. Comicand tender. Mezzo-Soprano/Alto.

Crissy (Late Teens – Early 20s):A naive and innocent girl with a childlike energy. Delivers the song “FrankMills.” Soprano.

Woof (Early 20s): Eccentric andsexually ambiguous. Admires Mick Jagger. Needs comic chops and physicality.Tenor.

Ensemble:The heart of the show. The Tribe members are essential storytellers andrepresent the diverse spirit of the 1960s. Every ensemble member will befeatured vocally and physically throughout the production. Strong movement,harmony singing, and the ability to build character within the group are vital.All vocal types (Soprano, Mezzo, Alto, Tenor, Baritone, Bass)
