A World of Magic, Nature, and Imagination: An Interview with Sue Ellen Shook

As Tinkerbell and the Dream Fairies returns to Melbourne and Sydney these school holidays, families are invited to step into a magical world where nature, imagination and live theatre come together. We spoke with creator and performer Sue Ellen Shook about the magic of the production, the joy of audience interaction and why live theatre is more important than ever for young children.

What can families expect when they step into the magical world of Tinkerbell and the Dream Fairies?

Families can expect to be transported into an adventure that lives somewhere between nature and our imagination. From the moment they arrive, they become part of the story, helping with problem-solving and joining in all manner of fairy activities.

There is singing and dancing to a unique, original soundtrack, before families are taken on a magical trip to Bubbleland. Here, they can interact up close with the Fairies and join them in their search for Tinkerbell's missing wings.

It's an hour of fun, spectacle and, of course, plenty of magic.

What do you love most about the production?

What I love most is the constant connection with the children in the audience. They aren't simply watching the story unfold — they are interacting with it and travelling through the adventure alongside the characters.

Seeing their faces filled with wonder and hearing their laughter is music to our ears.

How does the outdoor setting add to the experience?

Because the show is interactive and outdoors, it has this wonderfully organic feeling of actually being in Fairyland.

The beautiful gardens, lake and waterfall become part of the world of the story. The surroundings naturally transport the audience into the adventure, so they aren't just watching Fairyland — they feel as though they are actually there.

Do you have a favourite audience reaction?

One of my favourite reactions came from a little audience fairy in Bubbleland. She turned to Tinkerbell and said:

“Tinkerbell, you said we needed to find your wings and all you've been doing is singing and dancing!”

It was such a wonderfully honest observation — and exactly the kind of spontaneous interaction that makes live theatre so special.

Why should families come and see Tinkerbell and the Dream Fairies these school holidays?

For me, it's a wonderful opportunity to give young children a real live theatre experience at a time when so much of their world is dominated by screens.

They can step away from the screens, get outdoors, experience nature and see that world transformed into art, storytelling and imagination.

It's an opportunity to laugh, sing, dance, explore and be part of something together — and hopefully leave with a little bit of fairy magic of their own.
