Glenn Elston OAM

Artistic Director

Glenn pioneered outdoor theatre in Australia, which is now a summer tradition across the country. An idea that started in 1987 involving 12 people is now the largest independent theatre company in Australia.

Glenn’s productions include: ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Twelfth Night’, ‘The Taming Of The Shrew’, ‘Much Ado About Nothing’, ‘Richard lll’, ‘Henry lV Pt1’, ‘Hamlet’, ‘The Comedy Of Errors’, ‘Macbeth’ and ‘As You Like It’.

He has written/devised and directed productions of ‘The Wind In The Willows’, ‘Alice’s Adventures in In Wonderland’, ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Toad’s Birthday Party’, ‘Caribbean Pirates at the Polly Woodside’, ‘Alice In Neverland’, ‘Tinker Bell and the Dream Fairies’, ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’ and ‘A Picnic with Cole Porter’. For the past 15 years He has also co-presented ‘Walking with Spirits’, a celebration of the ancient Aboriginal tradition of Corroboree at Malkgulumbu (Beswick Falls), and produced two major tours through Northern Australia. 


Peter Amesbury

Production Manager

Peter has worked as a freelance Lighting Designer and Production Manager for the last six years. He has worked on productions and events all over Australia and Internationally. Peter started working with The Australian Shakespeare Company in 2013. During his time at the ASC Peter has worked on a diverse range of indoor and outdoor performances, in the roles of both Lighting Technician and Production Manager.

His ASC Production credits include: ‘As You Like It’, ’A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, “Shakespeare’s Best Bits”, “Twelfth Night” and “Hamlet’. For the past two years, Peter has also worked on the ’Walking with Spirits Festival’, a production which takes place in a remote Northern Territory location with an audience of over 500 people. In contrast, Peter has also worked on the UK performance seasons managing the tours of “The Wind in the Willows” and “Tinker Bell and The Dream Fairies”.

Peter also has a successful freelance portfolio as a lighting designer. His critically acclaimed design of “Guilty Pleasures” (Blue Saint Productions), which starred Angelique Cassimatis, has also toured Australia. 

Most recently, Peter has held the role of Production Manager on the Australian revival of ‘Godspell: the Musical’ which performed at the Sydney Opera House and the Arts Centre Melbourne.

Claire Nicholls

Education Manager

After graduating from BAPA in 2005, Claire began training with research and performance company, Liminal, having performed in their Green Room Award winning production: Oedipus-A Poetic Requiem as well as Antigone-The Descent Across the Bridge of Acheron and The Drover’s Wife Untold.

In 2010 Claire travelled to Hong Kong and China to work with Theater Du Pif on their touring verbatim piece The Will to Build. For La Mama Theatre Claire has performed in Virginia And Some Of Her Friends 2013, The Insomnia Project 2015 and Committee 2016.

Previous productions with the ASC include Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Henry IV Part 1, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and As You Like It. 

Sue-Ellen Shook


Sue-Ellen trained classically at the Victorian College of the Arts for the last four years of secondary school and from there moved into the world of freelance. For ten years her performance base went from television to cabaret, opera to corporate extravaganzas, theatre to clubs and sometimes all in one day! Sue-Ellen went on to tour Australia in A CHORUS LINE then to Germany for STARLIGHT EXPRESS. Freelance life continued on an international scale between Australia and Germany. During this time she also performed as Acro-Fairy in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT”S DREAM for the Australian Shakespeare Company at Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens. Upon returning to Australia permanently, Sue- Ellen was “BABY-DOLL” in Baz Luhrman’s MOULIN ROUGE and “TIGER LILY” in the Sydney production of PAN. She is
the mother of three beautiful children and the adventure continues.

Paul Norton

Musical Director

Paul started playing bass in various bands in his teens, which led to the formation of Melbourne band The Runners. After a couple of years of constant live work The Runners were signed to Mushroom records in 1981 and released their first single Sure Fire Thing in 1982 followed by The album Hitting the Wall and the single Endlessly. The Runners toured constantly throughout the early eighties and went through many line up changes before disbanding in 1985.Paul spent the next couple of years playing with various bands (Wendy and the Rocketts, Steve Hoy and the Hoy Boys) before launching a solo career in 1988. Again signed to Mushroom Records Paul released his first single Stuck On You which received immediate airplay and got to number two on the Australian charts. Paul then went to London to work with producers Paul Muggleton and Mike Paxman on the next single I Got You and the album Under a Southern Sky (the song Southern Sky was later chosen for Australia Day Celebrations at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney). Paul worked live with his band for the next couple of years before teaming up with American musician/producer T-Bone Wolk (Hall and Oates Carly Simon) to work on his second album Let It Fly which was recorded at Metropolis studios in Melbourne and mixed in New York at Electric Lady and Bearsville studios. Let It Fly was released in 1992 with the singles When We Were Young and Lil Red Riding Hood. Paul worked live with his band over the next couple of years touring extensively throughout Australia including many aboriginal communities and Arnhem Land.

In 1994 Paul met Peter Wells RIP (Rose Tattoo) and Cletis Carr and together they formed Hillbilly Moon and later that year released the album Hillbilly Moon Volume One with the song She Left Me receiving solid airplay on Country Music Television.

Paul was Musical Director and wrote the score for The Australian Shakespeare’s production of Much Ado About Nothing and the finale for the critically acclaimed comedy Certified Male.

Paul has written for and with some of Australia’s finest performers including Debra Byrne, Gerry Hale, Wendy Stapleton, Donna Fisk and Michael Cristian, Dobe Newton and Colleen Hewitt.

In the last few years Paul has divided his time between writing producing and working live and is currently working on a new album.

2006 saw Paul tour Australia with the Countdown Spectacular. 27 of Australia’s top Rock Acts of the eighties performing to 100,000 people nationwide.
